Bioware showing their support for all gamers in a positive way
Perusing the interwebs I came across a sad story of a gamer calling himself Straight Male Gamer, who although making sure he claims he understands he does not speak for all SMG’s, doesn’t seem to understand by undertaking this moniker anything he says more or less gets assessed to us all. On to the meat of the story, Straight Male Gamer seemed to be extremely upset upon playing Dragon Age 2 and coming upon a point in the story where he realizes it embraces all forms of relationships, whether hetero-, or homo-, sexual. This fact did not sit well with him and he berates Bioware on their forums for negleting their main demographic. His outspokeness was noticed and replied to by David Gaider, a senior writer at Bioware’s Edmonton offices. In his reply he acknowledges not all SMG’s will be pleased by their decision, they realized not all relationships are “one-size fits all” and they wanted to explore this avenue. As to not catering to their main demographic he makes a very strong and important point that any majority should not expect special treatment just because they are not the minority. All people, no matter whether in the majority or minority, deserve equal treatment.
Personally to me I am very upset of this man taking on this title while expressing his own views. I can understand someone being upset at something they are not comfortable with, but please do not take a stance on something while claiming a title that lumps you into a group, unless you specifically are the designated spokesperson as voted amongst your community. I am one for letting people explore themselves in whatever fashion fits them. Sure getting hit on by another male has its awkwardness but in my opinion it is no different from being hitting on by a woman who you are not at all interested in. If you think about it, to be hit on by someone, no matter whom it is, is quite the compliment. They obviously have found something about you that they would like to explore further and a persons interest requires their time, nowadays time is precious. Plus how do you think women feel being hitting on by guys they feel uninterested in, be it personality, mentality, or appearance. Women quite arguably are assualted regularly by people that make them fell quite uncomfortable and they have to deal with it in a way that is as political as possible without harming the other persons feelings. Otherwise, they are often branded a slanderous name by said hurt person to try and put them on an even keel in their mind. I think it is the least us males can do is to undergo some of the same trials and tribulations they have to endure, maybe it will help us understand our opposite gender and all those whose views are different from our own.
This interaction has garnered a lot of attention, especially the LGBT community, whom are extremely thankful to Gaider and Bioware for their open and welcoming approach to diversity. No More Lost, a blog dedicated to no longer losing people due to bigotry towards the LGBT community, posted up quotes of the actual response of both SMG and Gaider on their website along with their own views on the subject. I would appreciate it very much so if you would check their article out and become enlightened to how diversity is spreading and we can not run from it.
